PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

BAIN & COMPANY INTERIOR PROPOSAL - COMPETITION

Proposed as a competition entry for the rebranding of the Bain & Company global trade name, the Melrose Arch office required to undergo a refurbishment of its interior spatial layout to accommodate for its progressive expansion. Its requirement was deemed to be of high quality, be cost effective, and to represent the company’s service oriented approach, reflecting the fundamental ethos of the brand through its principles of collaboration, strategic development, measurability and organization.

My independent duties involved the conceptual interpretation of the brief, manifesting it into a high quality design proposal, further design development through three-dimensional and virtual –reality experiments, subsequently communicated by the following graphics and walkthrough video.

MILPARK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE -INFRASTRUCTURE

Anticipated as a Corridor of Freedom which should unify and create solidarity amongst people within previously inaccessible and inconvenient movement routes, the bridge is to connect the Milpark student housing node with that of the 44 Stanley Retail node, as well as act as an icon and gateway to catalyze the densification and esteem of the proposed artistic district with Johannesburg.

My role has included combined efforts within the stages of brief appraisal, site evaluation, preliminary urban design, conceptual development, as well as liaising with the professional team throughout the design phase. The project is still in the process of being further developed.

TEMBA CITY RETAIL DEVELOPMENT - COMPETITION

Requested as a proposal for the renovation and extension of a local shopping mall in order to revitalize the economic capital of its immediate suburb, this project was further envisioned as a catalyst for the social and urban regenerative potential of a community currently struggling with inequality and poverty. The design thus deviated from the expected typology and represented itself as a mixed-use development that took into account existing informal contextual linkages, as well as the bottom-up consideration for community-centered development and participation.

My involvement included participation within the analysis and conceptualization of the brief, as well as creating the following graphics for subsequent presentations.

MENLYN LINK URBAN DEVELOPMENT - CONCEPT

Proposed as a mixed-use precinct that mediates between existing energy enclaves, Menlyn Link aims to literally bridge the divide between non-pedestrianised and isolated retail environments in order to create a holistic node within what has been deemed as Pretoria’s next Sandton. The following images illustrate the scale and concept of the proposed initial urban scheme.

My duties have been liaising in critical discussions and design charettes concerned with the conceptual development, as well as developing graphics for presentations and further discussions.

ENCHA SPACE PLANNING, INTERIOR DESIGN & FITOUT

Sited within the newly developed corporate campus within Waterfall Estate- Midrand, the Encha-Office-Fitout entailed the design of a contemporary & professional office space that represents the newly established identity of the corporate brand while catering to the close-knit working relationship of its employees.

My role as project architect involved the design & conceptual development of the interior space and fixed joinery, compiling the necessary council and construction documentation for necessary approvals, procurement of contractors and team members, assisting on site with decisions and discrepancies between all stakeholders, as well as liaising with the client and the professional team through all stages of the design and construction phases.

VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY - 1800 STUDENT RESIDENCE

Requested as a bid for a 1800 student residence at the Vaal University of Technology, the mandate involved the design of an economically driven, modular living unit that satisfies both the brief’s requirements, as well as the minimum norms as regulated by the South African Department of Higher Education. The design concept involved deviating from the typical block typology that is surrounded by a parking lot, into creating a modular cluster that –when arranged on site- prioritizes pedestrian accessibility and legibility in order to create a vibrant and engaging public realm made up of permeable private and public space.

As project architect, my involvement included the interpretation, conceptualization and iteration of numerous strategies and proposals in order to attain maximum efficiency with regards to the stringent economic constraints put forward by the client. Modular bedroom, ablution and recreational units were pieced together in numerous ways in order to find a balance between economic efficiency and architectural quality. These considerations manifested in the following graphics for presentation.

ABSA BANK - SPACE PLANNING & CONSOLIDATION

Digital technology and economic process are redefining the workplace. Its spatial layout must be reflected by the reinforced ethos of collaboration and increased productivity. The mandate for this project was to consolidate and reinterpret the interior spatial layout of the Absa Kimberley head office. This involved the critical analysis of ritual in relation to commercial practices within the banking sectors to comfortably cater to the needs of employees and clients whilst attaining optimum economic efficiency.

My duties involved a critical analysis of the brief, liaising with the client and Quantity Surveyor, the design and conceptual preparation of multiple options of consolidation that strictly adhere to SANS 10400 and economically-driven efficiency ratios, culminating in a comprehensive drawing pack for submission and presentation to the client.
